Two policemen attached to Oko-Oba Police Station were killed
during a gun battle with a robbery gang on Monday in new Oko-Oba area of Lagos after the robbers
opened fire on a group of policemen on patrol.
The robbers, who were said to be between 10 and 12 in
number, reportedly killed the policemen around 2am.
PUNCH Metro learnt
that one of the policemen was an assistant superintendent of police, identified
only as Niyi while the other was an inspector.
According to reliable sources, the patrol team was on its
way to attend to a distress call when the bandits who were in three different
vehicles, opened fire at Pay-in Junction near Olaniyi Street.
The robbers were said to have used a Hilux pick-up and two
Toyota Sienna cars.
It was learnt that the slain policemen took cover behind the
patrol van and shot back but the robbers had an upper hand and riddled the
policemen with bullets while a sergeant and corporal managed to escape from the
scene.
It was learnt that when other policemen arrived the scene,
the robbers had already escaped.
Spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide,
could not be reached for comment.
