Rivers crisis: Amaechi opens up on battle with Patience Jonathan

Rivers State governor and chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has said his perceived misunderstanding with the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, arose out of his desire to provide a conducive learning environment for the children of Okrika, hometown of Mrs. Jonathan
Amaechi, who spoke when clergymen of the Niger Delta Bishops Forum visited him in Government House, Port Harcourt on Friday, said he has enormous respect for both President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience.

The religious leaders were in Port Harcourt as part of their efforts to mediate in the political crisis in the state, having visited Mrs Jonathan and the minister of state for education, Nyesom Wike, on a similar mission some weeks ago.

The governor said: “My lords, I don’t know what to say. Believe me, the only thing I want to say to you is that I want it to be on record that the first lady said when my wife came to beg me, I pushed her away. I have never quarrelled with my wife publicly, and I will never quarrel with my wife publicly. So there was no time I ever pushed my wife away, and there is no time I will push my wife away.”

“I hope this mediation will work. Niger Delta monarchs came and it yielded no result. Since you are men of God, I hope that God will bless this one. I hope so because that is the same way I spoke to them (the monarchs) and they said, ‘watch out, it will work’, and they never returned because it never worked. There are so many persons who had come to mediate but it yielded no result.”

Amaechi added: “If it is peace that everybody wants, I am ready for peace. When you say you are seeking for permission, I am wondering why, because if you did not have the permission you would not have gone to see the wife of the president. The mere fact that you have seen the wife of the president means that you have initiated the peace move. So you don’t require any further approval than the approval of God that you have started with.

Earlier, leader of the delegation, Rt. Rev. James Aye Oruwori, said they came because they needed the governor’s permission to intervene in the prolonged crisis in the state and the dispute between him and the first lady.

Oruwori said they took the challenge to intervene in the crisis without external influence, having also visited Dame Jonathan to restore peace to the state.

PDP warns Amaechi to allow due process in Chidi Lloyd’s arraignment

                                    image

Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the Governor of the state, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of plotting to scuttle the prosecution of the leader of the State House of Assembly, Hon Chidi Lloyd.

This assertion was made by the Chairman of PDP in the state, Felix Obuah in a press statement issued on his behalf by his media adviser, Jerry Needam.
Lloyd is likely to be charged to court soon over alleged attempted murder of his colleague, Hon. Michael Chindah in Port Harcourt.

Obuah said the accusation was based on a ‘reliable’ information he received that Governor Amaechi had directed the state Attorney General to lay ambush against the prosecution of Lloyd in Port Harcourt.

According to Obuah, Amaechi who had never cared to visit the injured lawmaker, Hon. Michael Chindah in the hospital or offered any assistance or condolence to him or his family, was hell bent on frustrating the prosecution of Hon Lloyd through the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Mr Worgu Boms.

He described it as an evidence that the Governor was comfortable with the life-threatening harm that Hon Lloyd allegedly caused Hon Chindah.

The statement said: “If Governor Amaechi desires peace, he would have gone to see the badly battered lawmaker and show concern for the sake of humanity but instead of that, he is plotting that the Attorney General of the State should enter a nolle prosequi to terminate the criminal proceedings to be commenced against Hon Lloyd.

“Such an action will not only be morally wrong but amounts to an abuse of office and miscarriage of justice. It will heighten bitterness and provoke the sympathisers and relatives of Hon Chindah who may be forced to believe that the actions of Hon Lloyd was not an accident but planned and masterminded by the Governor and Lloyd”.

The Chairman said that “irrespective of what has happened, it is inhuman and absolutely wrong for the Governor to be blocking the due process of justice in such a highly sensitive case where a lawmaker would have murdered another on the floor of the House as was shown on television”.
He added that “in as much as nobody is perfect, the actions we take when others are deliberately injured will help to heal wounds and soothe pains.”

Obuah cautioned that if the Attorney General went ahead to issue a nolle prosequi to terminate the trial of Hon Lloyd, the situation might heighten tension and further threaten the prevailing fragile peace in the state, stressing that nobody could tell the extent that the consequences may go.

He however, urged the people of the state and members of the PDP to continue to pray for the survival and recovery of Chinda who is undergoing medical treatment in London following the wounds he received when Chidi Lloyd allegedly attacked him with a mace in the floor of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Pokello Nare, Big Brother Africa (BBA): The Chase Zimbabwean representative who was evicted from the BBA House on Sunday returned back home Wednesday afternoon to a thunderous welcome.

The ‘Queen of swagger’ landed at the Harare International Airport just after midday and was welcomed by hoards of fans and family.

Fans had been freely transported to the airport by three luxury coaches and trucks and were wearing Pokello branded caps.

Her fellow Zimbabwean housemate, Hakeem Mandaza, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) officials, and Carnival Queen Zimbabwe, Dananai Chipunza were also amongst those who were at the airport to welcome Pokello.

Unlike other BBA housemates’ reception, Pokello’s was unique because the pomp and fun fare was inside the airport not outside.

While fans were waiting for her outside, she was exclusively being welcomed by Hwamanda dance troupe who performed for her whilst she was getting her passport stamped. Her son Nathan brought tears as he rushed to greet his mother clad in his soccer attire.

Fans could not be controlled when the arrival doors opened and Pokello walked out.

They could be heard screaming and shouting her name trying to take pictures of the diva. They were given a lot of time to take pictures of her before she was whisked away.

Lucky men had their t-shirts kissed and autographed by Pokello whilst others were given caps.
Indeed it was a swag affair as she was driven away in a stretch hummer whilst the convoy was mainly comprised of Range Rovers and the latest Mercedes Benz vehicles.

The Hovhorosi style team, who designed overalls for Team Pokello were also not to be outdone as they rocked the airport clad in colourful overalls especially designed for Pokello’s campaign when she was in the house.

Pokello paraded around the Harare C.B.D before being driven to the Cresta lodge where a press conference was organised for her. During the press conference, she thanked Zimbabweans for having voted and supported her during her stay in the house

A welcome party will be held for her this weekend.
