Hundreds of Nigerian students face deportation from UK

Hundreds of Nigerian students in London face deportation as London Metropolitan University has had their right to admit foreign students revoked.
Many of the international students speak of their deportation worries if not able to find a sponsor within 60 days, elombah.com reports.
“Some people come from poorer backgrounds… parents have sold their homes or land and made huge sacrifices to get them here,’ says London Met student facing deportation.
Lilian Owhor, 20, from Nigeria, is about to start her second year reading forensic science.
She said, “I’m really worried because this is my future.
“I have come in today to get my transcripts, as I will have to see if I can transfer to another university.
“I haven’t been very happy since yesterday. My friends have told me to have hope.
“The university have said they would help us. I contacted them yesterday before the final decision was announced but I haven’t spoken to anyone yet today.
“I haven’t told my parents. I am just hoping I don’t have to go back to Nigeria. My fees are around £11,000 per year. I have already spent a lot of money on my education here.”
Emmanuel Egwu, 24 from Nigeria is the international student officer at the university’s student union and about to begin his third year reading forensic science.
He said, “I have lost my job, not just my place at this university. I came over here in 2009 and I have invested a huge amount in this university.
“My role within the Union means I represent the students affected. More than 2,600 students studying here are about to face two options: they can look for another place in another university or they can leave.
“People have been ringing me all morning from their homes in Nigeria and India asking me what they should do. I have to explain to them that they have to stay calm and they can call whenever they need me.
“They will receive a letter from UKBA who will tell them they have 60 days to find a solution.
“This is devastating, some people come from poorer backgrounds and their parents have sold their homes or land and made huge sacrifices to get them here.
“I’m feeling very bitter. I can’t believe that they can do this to international students. It poses a serious threat to UK higher education.”
Egwu said the students affected were planning to meet with the vice chancellor of the university laterThursday (today).
“We’ll see what he has to say,” he added.
He said they also hope to plan a peaceful protest.
Syed Rumman, 26, graduated from the university last year. He studied law and is now the vice president of education at the student union and student governor of the university.
He said: “I require a T4 visa to work for the university so I will have to leave my job.
“I’m angry, I’m devastated, I’m speechless but on the other hand this is a wider issue, because this is the first time that T4 sponsorship places have been revoked at a UK university.
“There are lots of questions in my mind.
“But on a practical level, where are all these students going to go? You see on the news that people doing their A-Levels have found it hard to go to the universities they want to go to.
“I just don’t know what is going to happen. It’s in the middle of their studies, some of them will be submitting research projects of the summer, things will be unfinished. It’s a bombshell.”
London Metropolitan University’s HTS status was suspended last month while UKBA examined alleged failings.
A statement posted on the university’s website Wednesday night reads, “The implications of the revocation are hugely significant and far-reaching, and the university has already started to deal with these. It will be working very closely with the UKBA, Higher Education Funding Council for England, the NUS and its own Students’ Union.
“Our absolute priority is to our students, both current and prospective, and the university will meet all its obligations to them.”
The NUS on Wednesday contacted Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May to “express anger at the way decisions have been made in recent weeks and to reiterate the potentially catastrophic effects on higher education as a £12.5 billion per year export industry for the UK.”
NUS president Liam Burns said, “It is disgusting that international students continue to be used as a political football by politicians who seem either incapable of understanding, or are simply uncaring about the impact of their decisions on individuals, universities and the UK economy.
“This decision will create panic and potential heartbreak for students not just at London Met but also all around the country.
“Politicians need to realise that a continued attitude of suspicion towards international students could endanger the continuation of higher education as a successful export industry.
“This heavy-handed decision makes no sense for students, no sense for institutions and no sense for the country. This situation and the botched process by which the decision was arrived at could be avoided if international students were not included in statistics of permanent migrants.”
A UKBA spokesman said, “London Metropolitan University’s licence to sponsor non-EU students has been revoked after it failed to address serious and systemic failings that were identified by the UK Border Agency six months ago.
“We have been working with them since then, but the latest audit revealed problems with 61 per cent of files randomly sampled. Allowing London Metropolitan University to continue to sponsor and teach international students was not an option.
“These are problems with one university, not the whole sector. British universities are among the best in the world – and Britain remains a top class destination for top class international students.
“We are doing everything possible, working with Universities UK, to assist genuine students that have been affected.”
Keith Vaz, chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, said the move could harm Britain’s reputation as a prime destination for overseas students.

RCMP uncover a massive marriage fraud scheme in Montreal

Some people would do just about anything to get into Canada. According to a RCMP statement released Tuesday, Montreal police have charged 39 people in relation to an investigation into a massive fake marriage scheme which could involve hundreds of "suspicious marriages."
"The investigation revealed that Mr. [Amadou] Niang, a bogus immigration consultant who is believed to be the mastermind behind this scheme, provided advice on how to submit misrepresented facts to Citizenship and Immigration Canada to individuals whose visas were due to expire," the statement reads.
"Specifically, he organized fake marriages with the assistance of accomplices to allow these individuals originating from North Africa to remain in Canada. The network recruited young Canadian women in the Montréal area and arranged for them to participate in marriages of convenience in exchange for money."
According to the Montreal Gazette, the mastermind, Niang, made a brief court appearance Tuesday. His lawyer told reporters that there may be a plea bargain in the works.
Recent statistics are scarce, but a CBC News report from last year noted that between 2008 and 2010, CBSA had received some 200 leads on possible marriage fraud from various sources. In the same report, CBC cites an internal Canada Border Services Agency that says there is a collective "lack of action" on marriage fraud.
While the evidence points to an increase in marriage fraud, immigration attorney Michael Niren insists the problem isn't as bad as it seems.
"It should be pointed out that the vast majority of sponsorship applications are legitimate, submitted by well-intended applicants," he told Yahoo! Canada News.
"The [Jason] Kenney administration, in an effort to crack down on marriage fraud cases has proposed some restrictions..to prevent marriage of convenience cases. There are certain countries where marriage fraud cases seem to be more prevalent such as in India, China and Pakistan. But it I can't stress enough that most of these cases are for real."
Back in March, the Harper government did bar sponsored spouses from sponsoring a new spouse for at least five years
They've also proposed adopting a more 'American-ized' approach: in the U.S., newly arrived spouses are given "conditional resident" status for two years before they can apply for permanent residency.
Canada currently grants the immigrant spouse permanent status upon arrival.
How much money do 'fake' spouses make?
We're certainly not condoning marriage fraud, but have you ever wondered how much money you can make for 'posing' as a spouse of a foreigner.
According to a Tweet by immigration minster Jason Kenney on Tuesday, unscrupulous individuals would pay you "in the $60,000 range (or more)" to marry a foreign national strictly for immigration purposes.

Adesokan Wins Nigeria's First Paralympic Gold in London

On the first day of competition at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Yakubu Adesokan Thursday won Nigeria's first gold medal in the men's -48kg Power-lifting competition. Twice he bettered his previous records.
The 33-year-old came into London 2012 as the favourite for glory in the men's -48kg class, having claimed a world record earlier this year in Dubai with a lift of 177kg.
Adesokan lived up to his reputation yesterday as he broke countryman Ruel Ishaku's Paralympic record of 169kg from Beijing 2008 by three kilos in his first lift.
The Ibadan-born athlete did not stop there as, roared on by the crowd, he broke his own world record with a lift of 178kg in just his second attempt.
That record only lasted a matter of minutes, though, as Adesokan went on to lift 180kg - almost four times his own bodyweight - to take gold in style.
"I feel overjoyed," he said. "I went through a lot of training. I have been training for two months in Korea.
"Once I went through that training, there was no way I was going to fail.
"I can definitely lift more. It is a lot but what I usually lift in training is more than this, like 192kg."
Adesokan was joined on the podium by Russia's Vladimir Balynetc, who won silver with a lift of 170kg, while Taha Abdelmagid of Egypt took bronze with 165kg.

Cynthia’s murder: Pharmaceutical group petitions prosecutor over member’s trial

Cynthia’s murder: Pharmaceutical group petitions prosecutor over member’s trial

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, (PSN), has petitioned the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, to properly review the murder case of Cynthia Osogoku to ensure that pharmacists were not persecuted wrongly.

The four suspects accused of killing Cynthia, who they met on Facebook
The national president of PSN, Mr. Azubike Okwor told journalists on Thursday that if the suspects were not found guilty of the crime of rape and armed robbery, they should be handed over to the Pharmacists’ Council of Nigeria, (PCN), for proper discipline for selling drugs without prescription.
Mr Okwor says that if the liability of the two pharmacists was limited to the sales or alleged sale of Rohypnol to clients they do not know and never collaborated in the condemnable crime.
He noted that it would be logical to believe there might have been breaches of professional ethics, adding  that the law provides that such matters to be dealt with by the Pharmacists’ Council of Nigeria.
Four suspects were on Monday arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate Court for killing 24-year old Cynthia Osokogu, who they met on social media platform.
The suspects, Okwumo Nwabufo,  Ezeike Olisaeloka, Orji Osita and the pharmacists that sold the drug, Rohypnol Flunitrapezam-Maduakor Chukwunonso,  are standing trial on an eight-count of felony, conspiracy, robbery and murder.

Arsenal eye Essien on loan

Arsenal are reportedly set to make a deadline-day swoop for Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien.
Michael Essien: Third serious knee injury

Michael Essien has suffered numerous injuries in recent years
Essien has recently been linked with an £8 million transfer to Turkish club Fenerbahce, but widespread reports in the English press on Thursday evening claim the Ghana international has been targeted by Arsene Wenger. The Gunners boss is believed to be in the market for a central midfielder following the sale of Alex Song to Barcelona.

Reports suggest Wenger expressed to the Blues an interest in loaning Essien for the current season, similar to the deal which saw Yossi Benayoun move from Stamford Bridge last campaign.
However, when pressed on the issue, Wenger insisted the long-awaited returns of Jack Wilshere, Bacary Sagna and Tomas Rosicky from injury would provide Arsenal a greater boost than the addition of Essien.

"Getting our injured players back is the best way for us to strengthen the squad," Wenger said. "We do not just want to bring average players in.

"Spending in itself is not a quality. Buying good players is a quality, better players than you have is a quality."
Essien joined Chelsea from Lyon seven years ago and has since made 163 appearances, scoring 17 goals.
